Stretched Tight: The Hope of Advent

Dec 17, 2025    Isaiah Wilson

What does biblical hope really mean? It's not optimism or wishful thinking—it's being stretched tight like a measuring cord between two realities. In this Advent message, we explore two Hebrew words for hope (yakhal and qavah) and discover that hope is creative tension: the uncomfortable but purposeful stretching between Christ's first coming and His second coming. Using the image of a measuring tape that only works when pulled taut, we see how Advent invites us to live in the "already and not yet" of God's kingdom—honest about our pain, patient with the process, and actively faithful as we wait. Like Simeon who waited for the Messiah, we're stretched between what God has already done and what He's promised to do, anchored on both ends by His steadfast love. This is hope that sustains us in the tension until Christ returns.
