A Survey of the Gospel of John

Sep 8, 2026  •  Isaiah Wilson

Tonight we begin a new verse-by-verse series through the Gospel of John, and we start at the end. John tells us plainly why he wrote this book: so that you would believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and have life in His name. This first session lays the foundation for the next forty-eight weeks, covering who wrote this Gospel, when it was likely written, and what makes it so different from Matthew, Mark, and Luke. We also address the phrase "the Jews," a term John uses more than any other Gospel writer, and why it needs to be read carefully and correctly from the very first week rather than left for later.

John builds this whole book like a case laid out for a jury. The signs are the evidence, belief is the verdict, and life is what's waiting on the other side. This overview sets up that lens for the rest of the year, and it comes with a warning worth hearing before we open chapter one: knowing this book inside and out was never the goal. Knowing Jesus was. Join us as we begin a year inside one of the richest and most personal books in Scripture.
